I sat and stared at the door, still trying to think of something to say, some reason to call her back, until I realized she was probably miles away. I remembered the bags of food on my counter, and carried them next door to Jessie’s kitchen to put them away. Jessie was drinking coffee and looking through photos on facebook, something I had grown to hate. Being reminded that my friends still had lives, that they were getting married, having children, socializing, only made me depressed. I sat across from her, facing the back of her laptop so I wouldn’t catch a glimpse of any smiling faces from my past.

“I just had a visitor.”

She looked up, concerned, “Who?”

I told her about the vampire police woman, and gave her a synopsis of our conversation.

“There’s nothing wrong with you, Marc. Even I don’t feel bad about Chris being dead. He was creepy, and you knew it.”

She clicked her laptop closed and got up, grabbing my hand and leading me into the bedroom. We laid down together, my head on her chest, her arms around me. I’d been doing fine managing my sexual desires, but I still needed some physical reassurance once in a while. I tried to avoid touching her constantly, and so far I’d been able to keep a mostly normal distance between us. But she knew that when I was stressed or worried the closeness helped. I relaxed into her, and gratitude overwhelmed me. What would I ever do without her? I hoped I’d never have to find out.

“Hey. Why don’t you come out with me tonight? You can handle it. It’ll just be Ciera, Alex and Rob. We’re getting pizza at that bar where Connor’s band plays sometimes. Its not his band tonight, but the music is usually good, and it’s a fun place to hang. I think it would be good for you.”

I remember Alex, his strong jaw, his intense blue eyes, that little sizzle in his stare. “Ok, I’ll go. If you’re sure they’ll be cool with it.”

“Yeah, of course! I’ll tell them you and Chris broke up, they’ll love you.”

She gave me a little peck on the top of my head and I knew she was smiling. I was smiling, too, and thinking about what officer-42 had said about finding a human whom I could trust. Jessie liked Alex, hung out with him most weekends. If she could trust him, maybe I could too. We laid together for a few more minutes, in silence. I listened to her heartbeat, her breathing. She ran her fingers through my hair, like she used to do way back when we were dating in high school.

I had a memory of laying like this with her before, in her old bedroom at her parents’ house, with the pink striped wallpaper and her clothes strewn all over the floor. That was the day she told me she knew we should break up, that she wanted to date other people. I had felt the same, but I’d been afraid to hurt her.
